The Fire Services Act (1947)

On  01 April 1948, The Fire Services Act (1947) became effective which resulted in 148 County Council and County Borough run Fire Brigades. This act has since been updated as recently as 2004. In 1974 the local government re-organised many brigades which were in turn combined, this meant that many City and County Borough Fire Brigades were lost. Further changes were carried out in 1986 which saw many of the Municipal Brigades and some Country Brigades being renamed. In the recent years, many of these Brigades have been removed from Local Authrority Control and have been Independent or Combined Fire Authorities.
