Fire Service recruiting enthusiastic Volunteer Fire Cadet Leaders

Several individuals in firefighting protective clothing stand and kneel in front of a fire station. One person in the foreground wears a helmet labeled “Youth Instructor” and looks toward a seated audience in the background. The group of spectators sits outside the station’s open bays, watching the activity taking place.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking for enthusiastic individuals to apply to be Volunteer Fire Cadet Leaders, helping to shape and inspire young people across the county.

The Northamptonshire Fire Cadet programme offers children aged 13-18 the opportunity to develop valuable life skills, build confidence and gain insight into what it is like to be part of a fire and rescue service.

Volunteer Fire Cadet Leaders play a vital role in delivering the programme, creating a safe, supportive and engaging environment for the cadets to grow.

Two firefighters wearing protective helmets stand beside a white vehicle. One firefighter, whose helmet is marked “Instructor,” is positioned outside the vehicle and appears to be speaking to the other firefighter, who is standing next to the open door. A brick building and a warning sign are visible in the background.

The rewarding role will see volunteers join a dedicated team of youth engagement officers who mentor young people, support practical drills and classroom-based learning. The role also gives volunteers the opportunity to attend community events where they promote fire, road and water safety advice alongside the Cadets.

Ideal volunteers will have strong communication skills, a positive and professional approach and a passion for supporting the development of young people.

No previous fire service experience is required, and successful volunteers will receive full training and ongoing support.

Youth Engagement Officer Michelle Bates leads the Northamptonshire Fire Cadet programme.

A firefighter wearing protective gear and a white helmet labeled “Instructor” stands outdoors beside a brick building, holding a handheld radio up to the helmet. Another person in similar protective clothing is partially visible at the edge of the frame.

She said: “Being a Cadet Leader is a unique and rewarding experience that gives volunteers the opportunity to make a real difference in the community while supporting young people so that they can thrive.

“We’re looking for keen, positive role models that are committed to join us in helping the Cadets gain important life skills to reach their full potential. If you think this is you, please apply.”
