Road Safety

As part of our commitment to keeping our communities safe and well Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue Service (NFRS) works with partners through the Northamptonshire Safer Roads Alliance (NSRA) to reduce the risks to all who use our roads.

Each year NFRS attends around 500 road traffic collisions (RTCs). In addition to responding to road incidents NFRS supports various safety campaign weeks and works with partners to provide road safety education to our communities with the aim of reducing risk.

There are five main causes of serious injury and death on our roads, these are known as the ‘fatal five’.

  • Careless driving
  • Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Not wearing a seatbelt
  • Driving while distracted (including using a mobile phone)
  • Speeding

Along with partners, we provide road safety education packages to various ages and groups across the county, these include:

  • Road safety education in schools and colleges – please see the ‘contact us’ section for how these sessions can be booked).
  • Road safety education for community groups – please see the ‘contact us’ section for how these sessions can be booked.
  • Biker Down – a free course that offers motorcyclists the opportunity to learn practical skills to help avoid being involved in a crash, as well as essential first-aid training and advice on what to do should they find themselves first on the scene of a crash where someone is injured. For more details, please contact NFRS by phone or email and ask to speak to a member of the Prevention Team. bikerdown.co.uk In addition course dates and booking on Biker Down can be done via Eventbrite.
