Fire Door Safety Week 25-29 September 2023
#FDSW23 is the brainchild of the British Woodworking Federation, BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme and Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS). It is a campaign designed to:
- raise awareness of the critical role of fire doors in the event of fire
- ensure that everyone understands their responsibilities when it comes to fire doors
- encourage building owners and users to check the operation and condition of their fire doors and to report/rectify any issues they find
- help educate property owners and the building industry as regards the correct specification, supply, installation, operation, inspection and maintenance required for a fire door
Fire doors are a crucial part of the passive fire protection of every commercial, public and multiple occupancy building.
Approximately 3 million new fire doors are bought and installed every year in the UK. They are often the first line of defence in a fire helping to save lives and property. Despite their significant fire safety importance, fire doors often experience an unacceptable level of neglect. They are commonly the first thing to be downgraded on a specification, are frequently mismanaged throughout their service life, propped open, damaged and badly maintained.
The time has come for all parties to fully play their role in this critical fire safety matter by ensuring fire doors performs as they it should, from the manufacturer through to the building users. Knowing what to look out for and what to do if you spot a problem might just save a life.
