Hundreds apply to become full-time firefighters

A county-wide drive to recruit full-time firefighters has attracted hundreds of applications since its launch earlier this month.

More than 300 applications for firefighter positions have been received since October 2nd, when recruitment was opened.

And there is still time for people to apply as the deadline for recruitment is this Thursday, October 17th at midday.

This is the largest drive held by Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service for five years, with 32 firefighters being recruited.

Twenty of these firefighters will be needed over the course of the year to fill posts that become vacant as serving firefighters leave or retire. Recruiting and training them together as one group will mean that NFRS is able to maintain current strength and levels of service with no gaps in strength as people leave.

However 12 of these posts are brand new, daytime firefighters, growing the strength of the Fire Service and increasing the overall number to 254 from 242 firefighters.

NFRS will also be purchasing seven new vehicles – five fire engines and two water rescue vehicles.

Many people who have applied or are planning to apply have attended events at fire stations including Corby, Rushden and Mereway, where they had the chance to have a go at some of the tests involved in the recruitment process.

Chief Fire Officer Darren Dovey said: “We are really pleased to see that hundreds of people have already applied for these firefighter posts and we are looking forward to reviewing what we hope will be an excellent range of candidates.

“It takes a particular type of person to be a firefighter, someone who is calm in a crisis, has compassion and composure when dealing with incidents and also is open to the complete range of tasks involved with the work, for example visits in the community, which are so important in teaching people to avoid fires and other dangers in the first place.”

Applicants should:

  • Be 18-years-old by 31st December, 2019
  • Live in Northamptonshire
  • Have a full driving licence
